Vampire Reign of Terror

I was a baby
when the vampires first came
To suck the lifeblood
Out of my little body

I didn’t know love
But I did know shame
And those vampires of shame
Wanted my blood

Dirty
Rotten
Filthy
Sinner

Those words
Engraved into my soul
Before I even knew
How to use the toilet

Those ugly words
Became my identity
And the vampires rejoiced
And kept sucking

Babies are manipulative
And rebellious
You need to break their will
And the vampires feasted

These vampires
Lead me into temptation
To self-destruction
So they could keep eating

Their bite
Painful at first
Became familiar
And so they ate

They engorged themselves
On my very soul
Reveling in their feast
Expecting victory

Stupid
Ugly
Useless
Bitter

They wanted to destroy me
The pain was incredible
Exquisite really
And horror ruled

I met some friends
Along the way
That offered their comfort
That came at a price

Addiction
Mental illness
Chronic illness
Attempted suicide

The technical
And medical terms
Didn’t adequately describe
My descent to hell

And once I went to hell
I wasn’t sure
That I even believed
In heaven

Craving
Longing
Confusion
Anger

The vampires
Said they loved me
But their violence
Almost killed me

But violence is love
Or so I thought
The truth is
I didn’t know love

The main vampire’s name
Was shame
And shame
Is the opposite of love

Not hatred
But shame
And the vampires
Kept eating

Hell was made
For people like me
Who were bad
From conception

Hell doesn’t exist
Except on earth
But I’m still not sure
That heaven does either

Shame is powerful
So is love
And love
Can overpower shame

Love
Light
Life
God

God loves you
Basic, primal truth
Can drive out
Vampires of shame

The horror
The terror
Begins to dissipate
With love

Healing
Wholeness
Sobriety
Love

The greatest of these
Is love
And part of love
Is loving myself
